Chapter Eight

Jami’s new dog, Shadow, raced across the backyard, his ears flopping in the breeze. She laughed as she watched him chasing nothing in particular around the yard.

Having gone to the animal shelter the day she’d come back from her trip with Gage, she had fallen in love with the black Lab retriever mix on sight. Shadow’s owner had died several weeks before he ended up in the shelter. If the crowded shelter hadn’t found a new owner soon, they were planning to put him down.

She’d wanted to get a dog shortly after buying the house but had kept making excuses. After getting back from Kentucky, Jami realized she just didn’t want to be alone anymore. And getting a dog made her feel safer.

Dressed in a thick sweater, Jami sipped her coffee and watched Shadow play. She lounged on a wrought-iron chair. Every once in a while, Shadow ran back to the porch to look at her, as if to make sure she still sat there.

Restless, she glanced at her phone. She’d had a lot of work to catch up on these past two weeks and had no time to talk with Ty outside of work-related business. He’d said to call him if she just wanted to talk. Calling him felt like hitting on him. But she was interested, and she realized he felt the same.

It was Saturday, midafternoon. What were the chances she’d catch him in the middle of working out or out on a date?

She picked up her cell and pressed One. It rang three times, and he answered.

“You all right?” he asked.

She smiled. “Yes. Thanks for asking. Are you busy?”

“Depends on your version of busy.”

“Ah. I hear the sports channel in the background.”

Ty laughed at her comment. “You caught me with the remote in my hand. How’s that for busy?”

“Oh, I’ve heard men can wear out the remote.”

“At least I don’t have fifty pairs of shoes in my closet.”

She couldn’t hear the TV now. “I don’t have fifty pairs,” she denied, then realized he was teasing. She laughed. “I wanted to thank you for keeping your promise and walking me out to my car every day.”

“You don’t have to thank me.”

“Yes, I do. I appreciate it.” She took another sip of her coffee. “I haven’t had a chance to tell you, but I have a dog now. I decided to get one after my trip.”

“Really? That’s great. I didn’t know you were a dog lover.”

“Well, I didn’t know I was. But he’s a sweet dog, and he likes me already.”

“And you thought a dog would be good company?”

She didn’t answer him. She wasn’t surprised by his insight. Shadow ran across the yard and barked at the base of a tree at a squirrel. Yes, her dog was good company. Now she wondered why she’d waited so long to get one.

“What are you doing tonight?” she asked.

“Having dinner with a friend. Why?”

“No reason.”

A pause followed her short answer. “I can cancel if you want some company.”

“No. I wouldn’t ask you to cancel your date.
